(May 11) — Taking over when race-long leader Tait Davenport ran into trouble on the last lap, John Tindal of Fancy Farm, Ky., won Friday’s Pro Crate Racers of American event at Paducah International Raceway. Tindal earned $1,000 for the victory over the 31-car field.

Davenport, of Paducah, limped home in second spot behind his fellow front-row starter. Sixth-starting Ricky Waggoner of Martin, Tenn., third third followed by Mark Oller of Highland, Ill., and Steve Cole of Benton, Ill.

Davenport jumped into the lead from outside the front row and checked out, dominating the race while Tindal was among a pack further battling for second. The only caution in the 20-lap feature came when Jeff Patterson spun on the 12th lap after contact with Bobby Dauderman.

Davenport resumed his lead but heading into turn three on the final lap, a broken balljoint sent his car into the concrete wall. The pole-starting Tindall slipped by for the victory while Davenport settled for the runner-up spot.

Notes: Tindal’s MasterSbilt Race Car is sponsored by Bluegrass Dental. … He formerly operated the racetrack. … Scott Weber was the hard charger with his 18th-to-ninth run. … Tim Ratajczyk tangled with Emily Crowell in his heat race and nearly flipped over, suffering heavy damage. He made repairs before the consolation but ended up taking a provisional starting spot. … Among drivers failing to make the feature lineup: Credence Mott, Matt Santel and Joe Mike III. … PCRA competitors head for Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway on Saturday to complete the weekend.

Pro Crate Racers of America founder Mark Voigt was pleased with the first season on the Illinois-based circuit, and he is confident things will improve in 2012. The first-year tour drew 125 drivers at 12 races at tracks in Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky, averaging 26 Crate Late Models per event. The Oct. 14 season finale at Tri-City Speedway alone drew 44 cars in an event won by Steve Lance Jr. of Cuba, Ill., while runner-up Nick Lyons of Centralia, Ill., wrapped up the first series championship.

“I’d like to thank everybody for making the PCRA successful the first year and I believe next year will be even better, as we have been in contact already with some of the race tracks.” said Voigt, a long-time dirt and ARCA racer who operates the series. “We were really happy with (the season). “We have more and more racers telling us they are planning to run the series next year.” Voigt said. “So I have really high hopes of higher car counts for next year, and to have more races, too.”

Voigt expects return trips to Tri-City, Brownstown, Belleville in IL, Black River Race Park in Poplar Bluff, Ill., and Windy Hollow Speedway in Owensboro, Ky., to name a few. He’s going to be working hard this winter on a 20-race schedule of eight to ten weekends, with a combination of two- or three-race weekends, is what Voigt hopes to complete for 2012. A tight-knit schedule helps with travel and allows drivers to plan ahead for vacation schedules.

“That’s my perfect scenario,” he said.

There were ups and downs in car counts, a few rough spots — and Voigt had a learning curve in switching to series director mode instead of driver mode. “I have more respect for all the promoters than anybody. Everyone needs to stand on that side of the fence once, because it’s totally different.”

Voigt was particularly pleased with the technical inspections on the series all the way down to the season-ending inspection of the champion’s powerplant. “I’m really proud of everything,” Voigt said. “I think everybody was pretty happy with the tech procedures. We check tires, and tried to stay on top of it, and I think everybody felt like they raced on a level playing field. “All in all, I was pretty happy. I thought we had a good season. I think it proves this series will work in this part of the country.”

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (Oct. 8th) — Nick Lyons of Centralia, Ill., pocketed $3,000 on Saturday at Belle-Clair Speedway for two victories in the King Edwards Flip Flop 50, a sweep that moved him into the points lead on the Pro Crate Racers of America tour.

Lyons earned $1,000 for capturing the night’s opening 25-lap feature, and after a 10-car inversion for the following 50-lapper, Lyons earned another $1,000 victory. He pocketed a $1,000 bonus for the sweep in the season-ending event at the fifth-mile oval.

In the opening feature, Clay Baumann and Mike Hammerle started on the front row and battled early with Bobby Dauderman. Lyons was in the mix soon enough and took the lead on the 17th lap, just before a caution for Aaron Heck, who got into the wall. Lyons led the rest of the way, taking the checkers ahead of Dauderman, Hammerlee, Michael Kloos and Tom Carson.

The second feature was set by inverting the top 10 finishers of the first feature, then adding 10 more drivers from a pair of consolation races.

Lyons started in the fifth row and chased the leaders through the early stages before a lap-17 caution when Carson got into the wall and flipped his car.

Baumann and Daniel Heck where swaping the lead at the half way point. When Dauderman was in third when a wreck put a hole in his car’s radiator, knocking him out of the race and leaving Mark Oller and Lyons to duke it out.

Oller and Lyons made contact, leaven Oller’s car with front-end damage. During a caution for Evan Fink, Oller retaliated against Lyons and was black-flagged.

Lyons took the lead for good on the 30th lap and took the checkered flag over Daniel Heck, Bobby Martintoni, Clay Baumann and Michael Kloos.

Notes: The series has drawn 113 entrants in its first season. … Rick Salter’s team changed a transmission after the first feature before winning a consolation race. … Hyperco Hard Charger honors went to Michael Kloos (first feature) and Tim Ratajczyk (second feature. … Heading into the season finale at Tri-City Speedway, Nick Lyons (948) leads Bobby Dauderman (916) and Tim Ratajczyk (756) in the points chase.
